What Is An ISBN Number? An ISBN number is the "International Standard Book Number" which is a unique ten or thirteen digit number that is assigned to every printed book. A book's ISBN number identifies the title and the publisher of the book it is assigned to. All books printed after 1970 have been assigned a unique ISBN number. ISBN's allow you to search for a specific format as well since most ISBN numbers are different for the soft cover and hard cover version of a book.
On January 1, 2007, the book industry will begin using 13-digit ISBNs to identify all books. You will still be able to identify existing books by their 10-digit ISBNs for some time after the transition. But new books published after the start of 2007 will only carry a 13-digit ISBN.
On DealOz.com, you can use either the 10-digit (if the book has one)
or 13-digit ISBN to identify a book.
